Can you believe that we are genuinely having a conversation about potentially renaming Lake Burley Griffin.
For the last 50 years, the big wet thing, smack bang in the middle of Canberra has been Lake Burley Griffin….and it should stay that way.
Critics suggest that a mistake was made when they included Walter Griffin’s middle name in the name of the lake, and I think they’re right. It probably should have been Lake Griffin, or Lake Walter Griffin, but it’s not, so let’s just move on.
Listener Jason messaged me with this a little earlier.
If the lake is renamed, most people will keep on referring to it as Lake Burley Griffin, so what’s the point. Think about how many people still call Westfield Belconnen ‘Belco mall’
There are so many much more important things for us to worry about than the name of the lake.
And how much would the whole thing cost. How many plaques would have to be redone ?
Jack Waterford is stirring things up in the Canberra Times suggesting that on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the lake, we should change tack altogether and call it Lake Menzies
God help us.
Is there anybody reading this….anybody who thinks it’s a good idea to change the name of the lake ?
