Have you ever taken the ‘red eye’ from Perth ?

I’ve done it twice now…and I wouldn’t recommend it.image

On both occasions, it seemed like a most sensible at the time, but whatever you save in time at one end, you lose in tiredness at the other.

We managed to pack in a full final day in Western Australia on Saturday. Left Dunsborough at 11am after a big breakfast. We drove up the coast and checked out Mandurah. Wow ! Hasn’t it changed in 30 years ? I almost couldn’t recognize the place.

imageWe then took the coast road to Rockingham and beyond. Drove through Kwinana and Cockburn and up to Fremantle. Had lunch at a market in Fremantle before hitting the road again. It’s been 40 years since I’ve been in Kings Park.  We enjoyed the sights and laid down under a big tree for a while.

Dinner was at Papa Rich at Northbridge before heading to the airport. By that time we were both looking for a place to lay down. We couldn’t really get one for another 8 hours or so.

We left Perth just shy of midnight bound for Melbourne. I tried to sleep, honest I did, but those economy airline seats were not designed for those in the vicinity of 2 metres. I think I got the best part of an hour in little 7 or 8 minutes segments. Luisa is a much more seasoned traveller than I and she fared a little better than me.

We landed in Melbourne at 6.15am.  Breakfast and then I stole half an hours sleep on the floor !! Yeah, I know that sounds a bit bogan, but you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do.

Our Canberra flight left soon after 9am. By 10am we were in the car and heading back to Tuggeranong.

You have no idea how good it felt to crawl into bed after all that.

Back up at 1pm but we were both completely and totally wrecked for the rest of the day.  I managed to get productive but it was a struggle.

I slept 11 hours that night…and needed every single one of them.
