Are you happy ?
Maybe that’s too hard a question. How about this one ?
Did you experience happiness today ? What makes you happy ?
The things that make you happy don’t necessarily change your life. Sometimes they’re desperately simple.
The current movie Last Cab To Darwin centres around a likeable loner by the name of Rex played by Michael Caton. Rex is a Broken Hill taxi driver who’s facing a terminal illness. I’ve already posted about the movie, but I wanted to focus on one of the opening scenes.
At the start of the movie, Rex has been at the pub on a Friday night with his mates. A couple of them were absolutely trashed, but when Rex gets home he’s relatively ‘tidy’. Now, you have to understand that although Rex is a loveable larrikin, he’s very much a loner and there’s an understated sadness at the centre of his character. He has a love for Polly, the indigenous woman who lives over the road, but they’ve never really brought that relationship out in the open. Everybody knows that they’re an item, but it’s all done behind closed doors.
So he’s a little intoxicated and back in his modest Broken Hill house late on a Friday night.
Rex pulls out one of his favourite records and puts it on the turntable. He turns it up loud. Its the Atlanta Rhythm Section’s “So Into You” He gets a beer from the fridge and makes himself a simple Devon and tomato sauce sandwich.
And then for a moment, Rex is the happiest man on the planet. This lonely old bloke who fears that he’s dying, is in his element. It’s just him and his dog in his ‘castle’. He’s swaying along to the Atlanta Rhythm Section with beer and sanga and he couldn’t be happier. He ends up sitting on the lounge and falling asleep. The dog removes the sandwich from his hand.
You don’t have to have a lot of money to be happy. You don’t have to have had a lot of luck. You don’t have to be in love, you just have to be happy.
Enjoy those moments swaying to the music in your loungeroom because they’re more important than you think.
